Commonwealth Games – Delhi 2010

Elizabeth Cann has recently returned from Delhi, India where she competed in her 4th Commonwealth Games. In the previous three Games,  she competed for Jersey, Channel Islands where she grew up, however, this time around she competed for England. Elizabeth had a very successful Games, playing some of her best matches ever and walked away with two bronze medals. The nation watched Elizabeth go from strength to strength as the Games went on  challenging some of the best players in the world.

The games didnt start off that well for me as I strained a muscle in my thigh on the second day of being in Delhi. This meant that I had to take it easy for a few days. Fortunately my leg healed fairly quickly but I was not on  top form in my first few matches. However, as the tournament went on I started playing better and better and became more and more confident.

In Melbourne 2006,  I came fourth losing in the bronze medal play-off 21-19 in the 3rd set to Susan Hughes (now Susan Egelstaff). That was awful being so near yet so far from a medal after playing so well throughout the whole tournament. This time around, I was determined not to let the same thing happen again and gave my absolute all on the court to win.  It is hard to describe the feeling I felt when I won that last point of my medal play off  match. FINALLY I had won in 2 sets, but it was a mixture of excitement and relief.

Badminton had a team event and an individual tournament.  We started playing on the first day of the Games and finished playing on the last day. The individual tournament started immediately after the team event which was quite tough for me as I was the only ladies singles player that England took so I had to play all of the team event matches. However, my fitness is one of my strengths so that put me in good stead for tournaments such as this. It was a long time to have to keep focused but as this is unlike any other tournament which usually lasts 3-5 days, but as the Commonwealth Games only come around once every four years it was well worth the effort."
